چکیده
The animal: Bats are the most numerous order of mammals, and the most diversified of any animals on earth. This incredible evolutionary success is probably due to the huge advantage that echolocation gives them over their competitors by allowing them to fly and hunt in the dark. Several species are commonly studied in the lab, including the big brown bat, which is an FM bat, the horseshoe bat, and the mustache bat, which are CF-FM bats. The terms FM (frequency modulated) and CF (constant frequency) refer to their calls. An FM call is a short chirp that rapidly sweeps across a wide range frequencies (so it is a broadband signal). A CF call is much longer in duration (5-30 ms) and stays at a single frequency. CF-FM calls are a hybrid of the two, combining the advantages of both (which we will learn more about below).

How do tiger moths jam bat sonar?
The tiger moth Bertholdia trigona is the only animal in nature known to defend itself by jamming the sonar of its predators - bats. In this study we analyzed the three-dimensional flight paths and echolocation behavior of big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) attacking B. trigona in a flight room over seven consecutive nights to determine the acoustic mechanism of the sonar-jamming defense. Three m...

Title of dissertation: ADAPTIVE FLIGHT AND ECHOLOCATION BEHAVIOR IN BATS Benjamin Mather Falk, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Professor Cynthia F. Moss Program in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science Bats use sonar to identify and localize objects as they fly and navigate in the dark. They actively adjust the timing, intensity, and frequency content of their sonar signals in...
متن کاملAction mirroring and action understanding in children
The past decade has experienced an increasing interest in action underestanding and children’s mirroring of others’ behavior. Behavioral investigations have focused on the development and significance of mimicry, goal prediction and imitation. Others have focused on the neural basis of action mirroring, identifying particular electrophysiological markers or related brain regions. A vivid debate...
متن کاملBat guilds, a concept to classify the highly diverse foraging and echolocation behaviors of microchiropteran bats
Throughout evolution the foraging and echolocation behaviors as well as the motor systems of bats have been adapted to the tasks they have to perform while searching and acquiring food. When bats exploit the same class of environmental resources in a similar way, they perform comparable tasks and thus share similar adaptations independent of their phylogeny. Species with similar adaptations are...

In their natural environment, big brown bats forage for small insects in open spaces, as well as in vegetation and in the presence of acoustic clutter. While searching and hunting for prey, bats experience sonar interference, not only from densely cluttered environments, but also from calls of conspecifics foraging in close proximity. Previous work has shown that when two bats compete for a sin...
